Chesterfield cigarettes were introduced in 1873 by Drummond Tobacco Company in St. Louis, Missouri as a Turkish–Virginia blend; the brand was acquired by American Tobacco in 1898, then by Liggett & Myers in 1912 (moving production to Durham, North Carolina), and later acquired by Philip Morris (Altria) in 1999. In 1952 Chesterfield introduced a king-size version and was the first brand to add an extra wrapping to preserve moisture; in 2011, Philip Morris launched Chesterfield Red, Blue and Menthol variants in the UK market.
